Hot Cross Buns

Is Easter Easter without Hotcross bun, I few simple steps and you will have cooked better hot cross buns than the shop bought ones and even better generated no single use plastic packaging..

Just add:

30g apple sauce

25g coconut oil

Zest from 1 orange

120ml plant milk, warm

Method:

  1. Method:

    1. Add all of the ingredients from bag 1 into a large mixing bowl, followed by the “just add” ingredients.
    2. Mix with a spoon before kneading for 5 minutes (you may need some extra flour to dust the bench with here).
    3. Place the dough bowl back into the mixing bowl with a tea towel over it and leave to rise for 1-2 hours. It should double in size.
    4. Punch dough to deflate it and cut into 6 even portions.
    5. Shape each portion of the dough into a ball by pinching the dough so that the seam is at the bottom.
    6. Place the dough balls on a lined baking tray 2 cm apart from each other and cover with the tea towel. Leave to rise for another hour in a warm place.
    7. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius.
    8. In a small bowl, mix the flour from bag 2 with 35 ml of water until a thick paste forms. Use a piping bag or similar to draw the crosses along the top of the buns.
    9. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the top turns a golden brown colour.
    10. Meanwhile, make a glaze using 20g of orange marmalade (or apricot jam) and 10 ml water. Brush it over the hot cross buns.
    11. Leave the buns to cool on a cooling rack until you are ready to eat them or store them in a sealed container.
